Fashion. Icon.
A vintage Mickey tee will always be an iconic look. It’s too bad you can’t get simple, iconic merch in the parks these days. A lot of it is very tacky and the focus is usually on whatever the latest movie is (a live action Lilo & Stitch, you say!?). And then when there is something with Mickey on it, there’s usually a bunch of extra words on it too, like “Mom” or some other nonsense…
The only place you see anything interesting is the collabs and as much as I’d love a pair of Gucci sneaks, I cannot afford them*. Every time I go to Disney one of my sisters (it’s the same one each time) says, “bring me back a plain, black Mickey Mouse tee.” and I have to remind her that it’s not a staple. You can do a grey or white ringer with the park name (I seem to have several exactly like that); but for something really classic, you need to scour vintage markets or look for brand collaborations with GAP or Uniqlo. They have the look you want, but they’re not from the Parks! They’re not the real deal. Same goes for buying a customized shirt online at the disney store. Park merch is special.
I have high hopes for the new VP of Merch, Bobby Kim (aka Bobby Hundreds). Will he inject some much needed style into the merch situation? I hope so! First order of business: give us a plain, black Mickey Mouse tee…
Meanwhile, enjoy this mishmash of iconic people wearing iconic Disney merch, alongside some equally iconic designer collaborations. In Marc Jacobs’ case, it’s both at the same time!
